Sand mining

Nowadays a nice walk on the beach is often disturbed by the ugly sight and sounds of sand miners. Regularly one gets to witness the monstrosity of up to four pontoons with excavators industriously clawing away the shore. Sand mining was stopped more than a year ago by the government, but recently they gave permission to NV Sarika, Gebroeders Soebratie NV, Rock & Dirt Shippers NV en Handelmij Dharmsing NV to mine a beach that is already being eroded and has proven to be an important nesting site of two sea turtle species, of which one is endangered (green turtle)! On top of that the mining is happening right at the start of the nesting season of this endangered species...

You can find on this website links to reports as well that state how important this beach is for the coastal protection of our country.
